Description

The outbreak of various animal diseases in South Africa in the last few years is a serious threat to the growth of the agricultural sector and its reputation in export markets. This has fuelled demand for animal health experts who can help producers comply with laws on preventing and controlling animal disease, implement sound animal health strategies and access veterinary technical services when they need it. Like all Unisa’s animal health programmes, this diploma has the stamp of approval of the Veterinary Council. It gives students a solid grounding in all aspects of animal diseases and health, including anatomy and physiology, nutrition, pharmacology and toxicology and animal health law.

The programme is highly regarded in the agricultural sector as it combines theory and practice of animal health. For the practical side, students must spend at least six months doing experiential learning through an approved public or private veterinarian or technician. Students also have to attend five compulsory practicals, which are presented in collaboration with accredited animal health bodies.
