Students interested in a career in electronic media stand a chance to win a share of R1 500 000.00 worth of bursaries for studies in animation, graphic design, television and radio production through a partnership between SABC Education and NEMISA.

SABC Education is always looking for opportunities to assist learners in making a success of their career. This partnership offers incredible opportunities for learners in the broadcasting environment. To qualify for application of bursaries you need a Matric/Grade 12 / NQF level 4 related qualifications.

NEMISA has been training young people from diverse backgrounds since the year 2000. This started with training students on a fulltime basis in the areas of Television and Radio production, with just under 40 students a year. The students primarily came from disadvantaged backgrounds with emphasis on women who made up at least 60% of the student population. NEMISA has grown over the years and now produces more than 870 graduates a year, the learners are trained in Television Production, Radio Production, Animation and Graphic Design; MAPPP SETA accredits these programmes.

In 2009 NEMISA awarded bursaries to the value of R 1 000 000 through the partnership with SABC Education. The recipients of the bursaries came from all provinces through this bursary scheme. The TV and radio bursary recipients will be graduating in December 2010 while recipients in Animation and Graphic Design will be graduating in two years time. Unisa Courses - Fundamentals of Banking and Risk Management

• The module covers the following: the banking environment; the intermediation within the South African financial system; the importance of the financial service sector; the code of banking practice; characteristics of the banker-client relationship; and customer needs and requirements within a banking environment.

• The module covers the following: typical risks in a financial environment; legislation and regulatory requirements; operational risk in a banking environment; and risk management process.

Evaluation and examinationStudents will be assessed by means of two assignments per module completed during the semester.
A formal two-hour  examination
The examination will be done via a written two-hour examination for each module. There will be a sub-minimum of 40% to pass the examination for each module. An overall mark of 75% constitutes a distinction.
CertificateOn successful completion of the modules students will be awarded a certificate by the University at an official certificate ceremony.

Teaching methodThe Unisa open and distance learning paradigm will be followed. Students will receive learning material written in outcomes based format, covering the abovementioned topics. Learning material consists of prescribed text books (to be acquired by students) and a study guide supplemented by tutorial letters (supplied by Unisa).
Registration commencement date and feesThe individual commencement and registration dates are as follows:

• First intake:  22 January (registration takes place from 1 December until 22 January)

"If you can't measure it, you can't control it". Measuring and controlling financial performance are of the most decisive financial management proficiencies required in practice, as evidenced by
recent focus group discussion findings. In particular, financial performance evaluation,
financial planning, budget analysis and cost control are pivotal knowledge areas in business
today. An understanding of these knowledge areas is of particular importance to managers and
staff not directly involved in the finance function in order to gain insight into how their
decision making affects the financial performance of the organisation.


This course is aimed at marketers, buyers, non-financial managers, employees and entrepreneurs
in the private sector as well as professional people in educational management and the public

Description

Rising awareness of the impact of human development on the environment has broadened the scope of career opportunities in nature conservation. Many new career doors have opened, not just in traditional areas like national parks and conservation areas but also in environmental education, conservation research and eco-tourism. This programme offers a broad platform for a career in any of these areas and has been designed in consultation with the conservation industry. It combines theory with practical training in the form of compulsory practical sessions, as well as hands-on workplace exposure (called experiential learning) in the nature conservation environment.

Short Courses In Unisa - Victim Empowerment &Support

Victim support entails empathic, person-centred assistance rendered by an organisation or individual following an incident of victimisation. The output to be achieved by the goverment’s NCPS (National Crime Prevention Strategy) Victim Empowerment Programme (VEP) is a comprehensive model accommodating integrated service delivery for victims of crime and violence according to national standards. The University of South Africa, answering to its function of community service, supports these national initiatives and endeavours to contribute to the development of people working with victims of crime and traumatised employees.

The Short Course in Victim Empowerment and Support, aimed at enhancing skills in trauma intervention and management, has been running since 1998 and is the only of its kind presented by a tertiary institution in South Africa.

The course consists of:

Module 1: Theory of victim empowerment and support in the South African context

This includes:

• a comprehensive theoretical overview of the relatively new field of Victim Empowerment and Support, including both international and South African-specific perspectives
• a ‘how to’ model of setting up a new victim empowerment initiative at a local level, including the international award winning South African research into best practices on how to translate the VEP into practice in order to ensure the success of this initiative
• an understanding of what the impact of a traumatic experience is on the victim of, among others, crime and violence, and of the basic tasks and skills required to render empowerment and support services to victims
• an overview of how to manage different categories of victims from a counselling perspective
• an understanding of the different ways of prevention of victimisation in general, in the home, in public, the office, and elsewhere.

Module 2: Workshop in victim empowerment and support in the South African context

The workshop firstly aims to consolidate learning with regard to the theory covered in Module 1. Secondly, the workshop offers opportunities to develop:

• general skills in the empowerment and support of victims; and
• specialised skills in the empowerment and support of victims, with emphasis on the technique of debriefing as a crisis intervention technique.

At the end of the workshop learners will be better equipped to effectively intervene in trauma and crisis situations.

DurationThis is a three month distance education course with a compulsory four-day workshop at the beginning of the second month. The workshops are held at the Unisa Main Campus, Pretoria.

Admission requirementsThe information and skills contained herein aims at addressing the training needs of those who deal with supporting and managing victims of crime, traumatised employees and victims of disaster. Criminal justice officials, mental health workers, lay counsellors, human resources practitioners and mental health professionals (eg: psychologists/social workers). In short, this course is for people who desire the knowledge, skills and attitude to contribute to crime- and violence prevention.
